Here are some ways to promote sleep that moms suggested:
Establish a routine – bath, feed, story, lullaby – baby will learn that sleep comes next
Helpful gadgets – white noise machine, sleep sack, swaddling, humidifier, dark shades, a toy that shines rotating images on the ceiling
Extra touches – massage, lavender scented bath water and lotion
Our moms had so many other ideas: dim the lights, keep activity quiet & low key, perhaps Dad can do the bedtime routine, have their own bed, have their own room and/or co-sleeping when necessary
Very important tip: put baby down before they’re tired, before they rub their eyes and show signs of actually being tired. Yes, it’s true…put baby to bed awake and they will learn to fall asleep without walking, rocking, patting, etc.
We all know that parents are not at their peak performance if they have been getting little sleep so it’s important to establish a sleep routine early. If you’re at your wits end, a little professional advice may be needed. Jillian Dowling from Sleepwise Consulting came to chat with us and strongly believes that healthy sleep habits make for healthy children. A well-rested child is curious, energetic, happy, playful, and eager to learn. She’d be glad to offer you a consultation!
