Brampton Kids Celebrate National Bird-Feeding Month by Making Bird Feeders

Brampton’s kids turned into Little Scientists today to help our feathered friends find food in the winter!
To celebrate National Bird-Feeding month, Brampton kids made Bird Feeders for our February Little Scientists event. The cold weather and recent snowfall makes it difficult for our fine feathered-friends to find food so our Little Scientists set out to serve them a hearty breakfast!

As the children gathered, they created robust red Cardinals and kackling Blue Jays using the rather unknown but so much fun "feather painting" technique!

We made not one but two types of bird feeders. Our first project had us painting a toilet roll with margarine and rolling it in bird seed. A simple momstown green ribbon to hang it on the branch was added and job #1 was completed.

The second bird feeder was a lesson in hand-eye co-ordination and fine-motor skills.

Threading cheerios, fruit loops, blueberries, grapes, raisins and cranberries onto fine wire made this a lesson in concentration and is an excellent developmental exercise for toddlers and preschoolers.

Of course, there was plenty of opportunity to do some snacking as well so this project was a hit with the kids, and moms and dad. The birds will love their treats as much as the kids loved making them!

Thanks to Kids' CBC website for the nature craft idea, and to many other momstown chapters who inspired momstown Brampton to post this as a Little Scientist event!
